So Why is It Called GOOD Friday?

So why is it called GOOD Friday and not Friday MOURNING?..

If today is the day that Jesus died on the cross, what is so good about that?

Because of something so very bad happening on this day, we have all received something eternally and forever good.

The tragedy and horror of Jesus’ death followed 2 days later with His resurrection resulted in the eternal and everlasting opportunity for anyone and everyone who turns to God, through Jesus Christ, to be forgiven from their sins and to receive eternal life.

So the great part of today is that what happened long ago can give anyone who asks eternal life.

Those of us who believe and receive this know from our experience of getting to know Jesus through His Word and because the Holy Spirit enters our life and shows us a whole new way to think and live….

Check your experience ….

“To us, the Realm of Spirit is broad, roomy, all inclusive; never exclusive or forbidding to those who earnestly seek.” Big Book pg. 46.

Lord, thank you for the ultimate sacrifice for our sins to give us eternal life, AMEN.

“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” John 19:30

F.R.O.G.

Learning to rely…..

We learn from an early age to rely on others.

As children we rely on adults to keep us healthy, safe, and to help us grow.

As adults we learn that self- reliance only takes us so far and we need to rely on people, places, and things to get through our daily journey.

This is a good plan but we are only as good as what it is we rely upon.

Think about it.

People are human after all and prone to failures and mistakes.

Places can change due to the people in them or economic circumstances.

Things like electronics get outdated and even obsolete.

So the question is what can we rely upon that never changes and always is in step with our lives?

Maybe it’s different for you, but the answer for me and my house has been, is, and will forever be to rely on our relationship with God through Jesus and the Holy Spirit…

F.R.O.G. – Fully Rely On God!..

Check your experience…

“When we saw others solve their problems by a simple reliance upon the Spirit of the Universe, we had to stop doubting the power of God.” Big Book pg. 52

Lord, let us learn to rely on You and trust Your presences and guidance in our lives, AMEN.

“…we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God,” 2 Corinthians 1:9

The Best Personal Trainer

That Personal Trainer at the Spiritual Gym…

It seems just about everyone has a physical fitness routine they try to follow.

From gym memberships to hiking, biking, or running, most folks I know are doing something daily to keep their bodies healthy and in shape.

The point is that physical fitness involving diet and exercise is now a part of our culture.

Being physically healthy is something we need to own but what about our spiritual health?

How are we building up our spiritual fitness?

The good news is that just like our physical fitness routines, we can keep spiritually fit too.

Daily time spent in the Word, prayer, as well as frequent contact with other believers can and does build up our spiritual fitness.

What does your daily spiritual fitness routine include?..

Check your experience… “Assuming we are spiritually fit, we can do all sorts of things” Big Book pg. 100

Lord, let us grow spiritually healthy through daily time spent in Your Word and in prayer, AMEN.

“Exercise daily in God—no spiritual flabbiness, please! Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever. You can count on this. Take it to heart.” 1Timothy 4:8-9

Comfort Source

What is your comfort source?..

We have all sorts of things in our lives that provide comfort when we seek them and use them properly.

From comfortable shoes, clothes, and chairs, to people, places, and things, when we find comfort, we tend to return to the source of it again and again.

Our relationship with God works the same way when we seek Him.

He is waiting to help us.

All we have to do is grow our relationship with Him and allow His Holy Spirit to become our source of comfort.

So…what is your source of comfort?..

Check your experience….

“We could wish to be moral, we could wish to be philosophically comforted, in fact, we could will these things with all our might, but the needed power wasn’t there.” Big Book pg. 45

Lord, let us seek and find comfort in You, AMEN.

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Help Others

Whether we realize it or not, we are around people in need every day.

Some are in our daily lives, and others we encounter randomly, or so it seems.

Now the needs can go from a helping hand to a warm meal, to just a kind word and a smile.

What a difference we can make as followers of Christ, who have experienced His love, by doing good and sharing His grace with others that He so freely and unconditionally gives us. …

Check your experience. ..

“Helping others is the foundation stone” Big Book pg. 97

Lord let the eyes of our hearts remain open to see the needs of others as we go about our day, AMEN.

“And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.” Hebrews 13:16

We Can’t Take It With Us

It ain’t about the stuff we gain…

Whoever dies with the most toys DOES NOT win.

It’s common practice for us to try to measure our success in ourselves and others by the size and amount of stuff we have.

The problem with this standard is that it’s an illusion of the truth.

Whenever I find myself slipping back into this type of thinking I also tend to become less satisfied with what I already have as well as falsely base my happiness on the need to gain more stuff.

Perhaps it’s different for you, but my hope is that you are not measuring your worth to others and God based on the material stuff you have

God and others who really matter in our lives love us for who we are and not for what stuff we have.

Check your experience…

“In the realm of the material, men’s minds were fettered by superstition, tradition, and all sort of fixed ideas.” Big Book pg. 51

Lord, please let us see that our worth is based on what’s in our hearts and not by the stuff we acquire, AMEN.

“For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” 1 Timothy 6:7

Trading Truth for Lies

Exchanging the truth for a lie…

Part of being human and having free will is dealing with the constant challenges we face daily for our attention and focus.

There are all kinds and types of never-ending noise around us attempting to grab our attention and take us hostage emotionally.

We are led to believe by many tricksters and false prophets that their product or service will fix us and make us complete.

It never ends, or so it seems...

The gift of free will is that we can consciously choose what we focus on and what we allow to grab our attention.

The person, place, thing, or situation that we allow to dominate our mind will eventually invade our heart and drive our behaviors.

It becomes our God.

So the suggestion I want to make today is to take a long look in the mirror and ask ourselves, what or who is our God?..

Check your experience…

“We had to fearlessly face the proposition that either God is everything or else He is nothing.” Big Book pg. 53

Lord let us open our hearts and minds daily to turn our will and lives over to You to be free of the worldly false Gods, AMEN

“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator.” Romans 1:25

Lead by Example

Leading by example…

It seems to be an American cultural norm that we all have to “make it to the top” of whatever work or career path we are on.

The media and marketing that we are exposed to on all fronts seems to equate success with clothes, cars, and other material trappings far above what most of us can honestly afford.

“More is Better!” seems to be the subliminal message of success.

The truth is that more is not better.

While we need to support ourselves and our families,..

true success comes from becoming great stewards of what we are given and how we support and serve those around us.

Jesus came to serve, not be served.

He came to show us that there is eternal life through Him.

Our faith in God grows when we learn the truth in His word and become in tune to those people, places, things, and situations He puts in our lives…

Check your experience…

“How can I best serve Thee? Thy will (not mine) be done.” Big Book pg. 85

Lord, let us lead by serving and let us measure our success through our stewardship of the blessings you give us, AMEN.

“But the greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.” Matthew 23: 11-12

Freedom Through Serving

We remain free through serving others…

This is an odd concept, yet for those of us who have experienced serving someone or something out of the kindness of our hearts with no expectation of return, get it.

Think about it for a moment.

Every day we naturally help, assist, or give a hand to someone or something.

From parents caring for their children’s needs to yielding the right of way to another while we walk or drive, we are instinctually serving.

It’s part of our nature.

The Spiritual principle supporting this is the fact that through serving others, we are humbling ourselves to put others needs before our wants.

The feeling you get is immeasurable when you do something for someone who can never pay you back.

Helping others, does in fact, help ourselves…

Check your experience…

“Helping others is the foundation stone” Big Book pg. 97

Lord, let us exercise and grow our freedom through helping others, AMEN.

“For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” Galatians 5:13

Is It Me or Them?

Is it me or them?..

Maybe it’s different for you, but it has always been easier for me to blame “them” whenever things don’t go my way. It’s “their” fault I did not get my way, or it’s because of “them” I failed…

Now that I am older and have been walking in sobriety and with Christ for a while,..

I have learned it’s not “them” causing my pain, rather, it’s me.

The desire to want to blame others is a part of being human and self-will driven by pride, fear, and expectations.

These days whenever my desire to blame “them” crops up

I immediately look at what is going on inside of me that needs to change so I can accept the situation, thing, person, or place exactly as it is and

understand that through seeking God’s will and not my own self-centered will, I will gain acceptance and not be so caught up in the drama of the moment…

Check your experience…

“and Acceptance is the answer to ALL of my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing or situation- some fact of my life- unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God’s world by mistake. … I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world as on what needs to be changed in me and in my attitudes. Big Book pg. 417

Lord, soften our hearts so that we may see things as they are through the eyes of the Holy Spirit within us and not be blinded by the illusions of our own self-will, AMEN.

“Those people are on a dark spiral downward. But if you think that leaves you on the high ground where you can point your finger at others, think again. Every time you criticize someone, you condemn yourself. It takes one to know one.” Romans 2: 1-2
