Guard Your Heart

GUARD YOUR HEART!

We have many things in our lives that keep us safe and protected from harm.

From the clothes we wear to protect us from the elements to the various things in our homes, cars, and jobs, like locks, safety glass, and fire-retardant materials, we are surrounded by protection and security.

It’s so common and a part of our culture that we seldom think about it.

What about our hearts?

I don’t mean the healthy food we are supposed to eat and the daily exercise we are supposed to participate in that keeps out tickers physically healthy.

What are we doing to protect our hearts from the worldly influences that can cause us to make bad decisions based on illusions of material things that spark the pride and greed of our self -will?

How are you guarding your heart from these influences?..

Check your experience…

“Here was something at work in a human heart which had done the impossible.” Big Book pg. 11

Lord, let us guard our hearts from the illusions of this world by focusing on Your Will, Word, and Truth, AMEN.

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Proverbs 4:23

Why Worry?

Why worry?..

Schedules conflict, appointments run long, and our responsibilities never seem to end!

Now maybe it’s different for you but when I find myself, as I often do, mentally leaving the present situation because my mind wants me to start focusing on where it thinks I should be according to the “plan”, I must remind myself that this is where I need to be and now is where my focus needs to be.

Wringing my hands, pacing, checking my watch, calendar, or phone, won’t move the time any faster.

I have learned that the root cause of all of this for me is my fear-based mind’s desire to worry.

The solution I must force myself at times to grab and hold onto is that God has me right here right now for His own reasons and I need to be awake and present in this moment and not lost in thoughts and worry over my day not matching up with my calendar.

Worry won’t change a thing, except to make your present situation more uncomfortable…

Check your experience…

“Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God’s world by mistake.” Big Book pg. 417

Lord, let us trade in our worries for your grace and guidance, AMEN.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4: 6-7

Faith Over Fear

Faith or fear?..

It’s the age-old problem that we face every day.

It comes seemingly from out of nowhere, but if not confronted immediately, our day can get hijacked with our thoughts taken hostage and our minds blinded by it.

What is it?

FEAR…

OK, so maybe you are one of those invincible folks already so full of faith that fear has no way to get a grip inside of you.

I wish I could say that, but I am human and without putting myself in check with faith each time a fear tries to crop up, I am a victim.

Try this the next time you find yourself stepping on the gas out of fear of missing the light, or when your mind fills with words you feel you must immediately say, instead of listening to the conversation completely before it’s your turn to speak…

I bet Y’all didn’t consider those as a fear did you?..

RELAX and let your faith guide your mind!..

Check your experience…

“We think fear ought to be classed with stealing. It seems to cause more trouble.” Big Book pg. 68

Lord, quiet the fears in our minds with the Faith in our hearts, AMEN.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

Word Choice

Choose your words…

Words can either heal, help, or hurt, depending on how we choose to use them.

One of the things we can’t recall, rewind, or take back are the words that come flying from our mouths fueled by fear, anger, or other emotions of the moment.

I have learned painfully over the years that it’s best for me to not let the emotions of the moment inside of me fuel my words.

I have found that when, instead of letting my emotions of the moment lead the charge of my “verbal vomit”,..

I quietly give the words to God and let the Holy Spirit guide my emotions and quiet my will, so that I can use better words for the situation…

Check your experience…

“Patience, tolerance, understanding and love are the watchwords.” Big Book pg. 118

Lord let the words we choose be fueled with love, kindness, and encouragement, AMEN.

“The right word spoken at the right time is as beautiful as gold apples in a silver bowl.” Proverbs 25:11

Getting What We Give

We get out of it what we put into it…

Here is a twist of thinking I learned long ago that has not only helped me to grow as a person, and as God’s kid, but also has helped me to be more in tune to the needs of others.

It’s very simple. Instead of seeing what I can get from every interaction I have with people, places, and things, I see what I can bring to it.

The feeling is amazing and the outcome is usually better than I expect, plus I have gotten to know people on a deeper level!

It changed my perspective and now instead of having expectations of how I think things should go, I now have blessed peace just looking to see how I can help.

Go on, give it a try and as always….

Check your experience…

“But be sure you are on solid spiritual ground before you start and that your motive in going is thoroughly good. Do not think of what you will get out of the occasion. Think of what you can bring to it.” Big Book pg. 102

Lord, let us see what we can bring to a situation instead of always looking to see what we can get from it, AMEN.

“Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them.” Matthew 7:12

Charity Starts at Home

Charity begins at home…

This is one of the best thought tools I have come to rely on over the years.

The version I learned was phrased like this;

“You can’t keep it unless you give it away.”

It’s an action thought that has never failed me since I began my walk with Christ and in sobriety.

Unless I am willing to help another, I am not in a true position to spiritually receive the gifts the Lord blesses me with.

Now this doesn’t mean we should give away everything we have, or start a crusade to end world homelessness, but ..

It does mean that each day we should open the eyes of our hearts to see how we can best be of service to someone around us…

Check your experience….

“Helping others is the foundation stone” Big Book pg. 97

Lord, please open the eyes of our heart daily to see how we can best serve another, AMEN.

“…that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27

God Does Not Change

There is one thing that doesn’t change…

Change is constant in our world. Styles change, seasons change, tastes change, and our preferences change too.
Change never seems to stop, and it can be confusing.
I still miss having a cassette deck in my car and my mullet!
However, there is one thing that will never change no matter whether we choose to participate or not. God is constant in our lives and is there for us if we let Him…
Check your experience…

“Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change… We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.” Big Book pg. 84

Lord let our hearts take comfort in knowing that no matter what, You do not and will not change your love for us, AMEN.

“For I am the LORD, I do not change” Malachi 3:65

Free Will Isn’t Free

The consequences of free will…

We have speed limits that suggest how fast we should go.

We have warning labels on products to help us understand their intended use.

We even have instructions on other things to help us use them correctly, like “rinse, lather, repeat.”

Even though we are free to do what we want, ignoring these suggestions can lead to consequences.

It’s the same with our free will.

While we can choose to behave any way, we like, but we are still accountable spiritually and morally.

I have made enough poor choices in my journey to learn that I GET what I GIVE.

These days I try to follow the speed limits and align my will with God’s instead of doing my own thing.

How’s it working out for you?..

Check your experience…

Wasn’t it because self-reliance failed us?” Big Book pg. 68

Lord, let us enjoy the blessings and grace of seeking Your will and not be blinded by the illusions of self will, AMEN.

Leading by Example

 Leading by example…

It seems to be an American cultural norm that we all have to “make it to the top” of whatever work or career path we are on.

The media and marketing that we are exposed to on all fronts seems to equate success with clothes, cars, and other material trappings far above what most of us can honestly afford.

“More is Better!” seems to be the subliminal message of success.

The truth is that more is not better.

While we need to support ourselves and our families,..

true success comes from becoming great stewards of what we are given and how we support and serve those around us.

Jesus came to serve, not be served.

He came to show us that there is eternal life through Him.

Our faith in God grows when we learn the truth in His word and become in tune to those people, places, things, and situations He puts in our lives…

Check your experience…

“How can I best serve Thee? Thy will (not mine) be done.” Big Book pg. 85

Lord, let us lead by serving and let us measure our success through our stewardship of the blessings you give us, AMEN.

“But the greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.” Matthew 23: 11-12

Friends in Low Places

We’ve got friends in low places….

It’s obvious that Jesus came to save the lost, and they were all drawn to Him, but the religious establishment of the time complained about this constantly.

If they had their way, the religious people would have driven the sinners far away, but Jesus did not allow this to happen.

He came to seek out and save the lost. Jesus had and still has friends in low places.

Today we see His statue in beautiful churches, but we will still experience His presence in the streets and in our daily encounters.

He still wants to speak with you today.

He needs us to help Him reach others.

Don’t give up, and know that it is not Jesus that is driving you away when worldly clamors get in the way.

Using our hands to touch them, and our voice to speak to them, He can and will reach folks right where they are…

Check your experience…

“There had been a humble willingness to have Him with me — and He came.” Big Book pg. 12

Lord, please continue to use us to reach others in the same way You were first introduced. to us, AMEN.

“The tax collectors and sinners all came to listen to Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to complain: “Look, this man welcomes sinners and even eats with them.” Luke 15:1-2
