My”Rights”

I have these “rights”…

Have you ever had one of those days where nothing seems to go right?

Maybe even a week or longer where things just are not working out?

It’s frustrating when we are going through these times.

Now maybe it’s different for you but, when things don’t go my way or the way I expect them to, my “rights” move in and try to convince me that my way is the only way and the best way.

This crowds out not only reality, but also the ability for God to work in me and through me to show me what is meant to be.

I have learned through these times and over the years to look for the good and hold fast to my knowledge and experience that my faith will see me through and my hopes will keep me looking for the positive…

Check your experience…

“I can watch my serenity level rise when I discard my expectations. But then my “rights” try to move in, and they too can force my serenity level down. I have to discard my “rights,” as well as my expectations,” Big Book pg 420.

Lord, remind our hearts in times of struggle and discomfort that this will pass and to look for the good and not focus on the bad, AMEN.

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Have a blessed day Y’all!

Caller ID

Looking at your Caller ID…

Modern technology provides us with many conveniences that make our lives easier as well as more informed.

From instant information available to all on the internet to digital medical records that doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies securely share, these benefits enable us to lead easier and more productive lives.

One thing I particularly enjoy is caller ID.

Back in the day when the wall phone in the kitchen rang, w
e had to answer it no matter what and we never knew who was calling.

Caller ID has simplified my life.

If you are on my contact list, I know it’s you and I will answer, if you are unknown to me, then you get to speak to the voice mail I check once a week!

Spiritually speaking we have the same opportunity with the calls on our hearts and souls.

God uses Jesus and the Holy Spirit to call on us through our hearts to not only help us but also show us His will for us.

Because God loves us unconditionally, He gives us the free will to choose to take His call or not.

What is our choice to be?..

Check your experience…

“There had been a humble willingness to have Him with me — and He came.” Big Book pg 12

Lord, let us answer Your call knowing You have the answer for us as well as the way of grace and peace, AMEN.

“…lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.” Ephesians 4:1

Wisdom

There are book smarts, street smarts, and then there is wisdom…

Most of us can claim to be graduates of the School of Hard Knocks.

Experience teaches us much and we learn from our mistakes and even from our victories.

Some of us can even claim advanced degrees from our School of Hard Knocks, b
ut…

The ones I have learned the most from are the students of God’s Word.

Some have their undergraduate degrees from our Alma Mater, but ultimately their trust in the Lord and thirst for His Word gives them the wisdom we all naturally seek.

From Who and where are you gaining your wisdom?..

Check your experience…

“Our ideas did not work. But the God idea did.” Big Book pg. 50

Lord fill us with Your wisdom that comes from Your Spirit and Word, AMEN.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously” James 1:5

I Can’t, HE Can

I can’t. … HE can. … I think I will let Him….
The pressures of everyday life can become overwhelming.
Especially when we fall under the worldly illusion that we must do it all alone, by ourselves and perfectly.
Friends, please know that you are never, ever, alone!

The Holy Spirit lives in our hearts and will see us through times of stress and uncertainty.
Have you tried allowing God to carry those heavy burdens?..
Check your experience…

“I can’t. … HE CAN. … I think I will let HIM.” Big Book Steps 1, 2,& 3

Lord remind our hearts in times of stress and heaviness that You are with us and ready to shoulder the load, AMEN.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
Have a blessed day Y’all!

Action Brings Results

Actions bring results …

Perhaps you are free of this, or have no issues with it, but it’s an age-old twist on our thinking that causes a lot of us to become resentful, jealous, envious, or even bitter.

We want people to judge us by our intentions while we choose to judge others by their actions.

It’s another condition of being human.

The solution is pretty simple.

We must own this twist of thinking and correct it through our own actions and efforts and not our intentions.

Think about it, are we able to see the results of others or our own intentions?

I INTENDED to lose weight…

I INTENDED to get my college degree…

I INTENDED to be a better husband and father…

 It carries no lasting effects.

Only actions on our part brings the desired and needed results. …

Check your experience. …

“It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels.” Big Book pg. 85

Lord let us put actions behind our efforts to be better people, seeking Your will and not our own, AMEN.

“Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.” 1 John 3:18

Easy Button

If we just had our own “Easy” button…

Remember those Staples commercials with the “Easy” button?

Wouldn’t it be great if we all had one of those?

It seems life would be so much more manageable if whatever we needed changed, fixed, or done could be handled by just pressing the Easy button.

Unfortunately, that is not how it works, unless you are a toddler!

We have to put in effort, willingness, and old-fashioned work in order to survive and grow.

This is a spiritual principle and sometimes we forget this.

The Bible has a few examples where Jesus asks impaired and sick folks if they want to be well.

He immediately heals them when they say yes, but like Paul Harvey used to share, there is always the “rest of the story” that we need to know in order to be able to understand the healings.

These folks demonstrated faith, hope, and willingness long before Jesus came to heal them.

This is why he healed them because he knew that they had put in the hard work and the HEART work ahead of time to prepare them to receive
His healing.

How’s that working out for you?

Are you just sitting on the sideline wishing and waiting for Jesus to fix you or your situation or are you doing something daily to demonstrate your faith by providing the needed willingness and effort to show you are doing your part?..

Check your experience…

“Yet they got well.” Big Book pg 110

Lord, let us provide action daily to show our willingness to change and grow closer to You and Your will for us, AMEN.

“Would you like to get well?” John 5:6

Pressing On

Keep pressing on…

Have you noticed how much more automated our lives have become?

From the GPS systems in our devices and cars to the “smart” appliances that can alert us to when they need attention or restocking, we now have more things than ever that can do our thinking and work for us.

While automation is a nice convenience that allows us to focus our time and attention on other matters, how do we keep our focus on our spiritual growth?

I enjoy my daily Bible study along with the spiritual tools and devotions that are delivered to me daily via email, but I remain grateful that I still have to apply the humble willingness to study and learn daily.

Applying what I learn in the Word to my life daily helps me to keep walking with Jesus and pressing on toward His will for me.

Thank goodness I have not automated this part of my life!

This would block me off from the sunlight of His Spirit and I could become lost in the illusions of this material world.

 How about you?

What parts of your life have become automated that perhaps are removing you from growing spiritually?..

Check your experience…

“The point is, that we are willing to grow along spiritual lines.” Big Book pg. 60

Lord, let us not automate our daily time with You in the Word, AMEN.

Clear Vision

Regaining our sight..

Have you ever noticed how our attitudes, behaviors, and even our sight can be influenced by pride, anger, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, and or sloth? (PAGLEGS)

These are influenced by our self-driven fears and change how we see things from how things actually are.

Vision influenced by emotions is not clear vision.

This poor vision leads us to all sorts of bad choices, actions, and decisions.

Check your “vision” next time you are being led by emotions into hasty actions.

Turn your will over to God and watch your vision (and emotions) be restored…

Check your experience…

“His presence had been blotted out by worldly clamors, mostly those within me. And so, it has been ever since. How blind I had been.” Big Book pg. 12-13

Lord open the eyes of our hearts so that we can see past the emotions of the moment, AMEN.

“Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 9:17

Count the Cost

What is the total cost?..

Anyone who knows me understands my preference to avoid numbers in just about every situation that I can.

What I have learned in life and in school is that everything has a cost.

Not only a numerical valued cost, but also the cost of time, effort, relationships, and growth.

It’s pretty easy to count the numerical cost in most things.

My wallet and my bank account are a constant reminder that I am not made of money.

Now maybe it’s different for you, but it’s those other costs that are the most expensive to me.

I have learned to ask myself what is the cost; to the relationship, time, as well as what value is to be gained.

Needless to say, whenever Miss Tami or my daughter needs me, that automatically wins, …

but what about the time I spend on other matters that may or may not be healthy for me or my relationships with my family, friends, and Jesus?…

Check your experience…

“Simple, but not easy; a price had to be paid.” Big Book pg. 14

Lord, let us include our loves, our priorities, and our relationship with You when we count the cost of our efforts, AMEN.

“But don’t begin until you count the cost.” Luke 14:2

Bad Moment

Don’t turn a bad moment into a bad day….

Have you ever noticed that what you focus on influences how you feel and act?

For instance playing with children can make some older folks feel young and more alive.

How about the feeling of accomplishment after completing a workout at the gym?

What about the uncomfortable and unpleasant parts of our day that we all have?

Have you ever noticed what happens when we focus on that?

It tends to drag us into the negative mindset and bring us down.

Now maybe it’s different for you, but I have found that when I enter into the unpleasant moments of my day, …

instead of focusing on the anticipation of the impending doom or negativity,..

I remind myself of all the good in my life and that this is just a moment in my day that will eventually pass.

I find that when I greet negative times with cheerfulness, the negativity has a hard time taking me hostage.

How’s that working out for you?..

Check your experience…

“We were prepared to look at it from an entirely different angle.” Big Book pg 66

Lord, let us walk through the negative times knowing this is but a moment but You are in our heart forever and that we have blessings awaiting us, AMEN.

“Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.” Philippians 2:14-15
